Wallonia's Areas of Excellence

Wallonia has a worldwide reputation for innovation, and for the quality of its research. The region has produced such scientific leaders as Nobel Prize recipients Jules Bordet, Albert Claude and Christian de Duve. It is home to a rich fabric of diverse industries, including some 65,000 SMEs in numerous traditional and technology-based sectors.

Seven "Areas of Excellence" have been identified as representing the major growth sectors that fuel Wallonia's economy and hold the most potential for commercialization of emerging technologies. Through public/private collaboration, "competitiveness clusters" have been established within each Area of Excellence, bringing together government, funding agencies and university research departments to promote development in each sector. In addition, many of these sectors support business incubators and other collaborative enterprises that nurture emerging technology ventures.
