'SBIRT' stands for: Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral and Treatment SBIRT is a widely accepted acronym for a set of practices and tools that are being put in place in medical institutions across America.

Screening: InSight trains Harris County Hospital District staff to incorporate into routine patient care an accurate screening for alcohol, drugs and tobacco, and a simple approach to brief advice. InSight’s SBIRT screening practice consists of 3 questions, similar to questions health care providers already ask.

Brief Intervention: If a patient screens positive, an InSight specialist conducts a Brief Intervention, in which special Motivational Interviewing techniques are used to establish an open, candid dialog that encourages change. Learn more about Motivational Interviewing:

Referral and Treatment: InSight specialists can refer patients to inpatient or outpatient counseling with a provider or facility within the InSight network.

From Asking Comes Answers

Most health care providers already ask their patients about drugs, alcohol and tobacco, especially in the Emergency Center (EC).

InSight recommends asking about drugs, alcohol and tobacco in a specific, consistant manner, consciously designed to elicit the most accurate and honest responses.

InSight Badge Cards tell staffers exactly what questions to ask and offers tips for dispensing brief advice based on the patient’s answers.

InSight screening doesn’t add to the staffer’s workload. It merely provides a more effective way to use details they already gather to benefit patients and reduce repeat visits, especially to the EC.
