Myth: Most alcoholics are middle aged men who are skid row bums.

Very few alcoholics fit this commonly held stereotype. Alcoholism does not discriminate based on gender, race, or socioeconomic status. Although some groups are at less risk than others, anyone can develop alcoholism. Evidence is clear that the proportion of women to men with alcoholism is increasing, and that adolescents and young adults can have alcohol dependence. In fact, most alcoholics have jobs and live with their families.
